"It becomes irritated and red; and now, the gums become the biggest portal of bacteria to the blood stream that swim through the body and cause all kinds of other problems, like a risk of stroke and heart attack and erectile dysfunction," Dr. Maples explained.
"The mouth is a real window to what's going on in the rest of the body," Dr. Maples said. 500 of her patients filled out the survey and had their blood tested from a finger prick. The results found 19% of them were pre-diabetic.
